InMath (CS4) and GREP Styles Within a Paragraph Style

You might know that you can automatically style characters within a paragraph by configuring a "GREP Style" within the paragraph style options. This works since InDesign/InCopy CS4.

Unfortunately InMath can't support this feature at the moment. For example: if you superscript by GREP style the digits "2" and "3" that follow an "x" or "y" and try to build a fraction out of "x2/y2", then the fraction will be misaligned.

Workaround: In addition to the GREP style, assign a character style to the regarding characters (in our example, the "2" and the "3") which only superscripts these characters.

The InMath developers are investigating this issue, and we will keep you informed about each new development.

We are happy to cite the following news from the Woodwing community website:

"Today i.t.i.p has become Premium Technology Partner of WoodWing. i.t.i.p products are a valuable addition to the Enterprise solution. This is also proofed by the shared customers, like Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in the US and SM Ediciones (Mexico).

i.t.i.p. products include InMath and Readabilities. InMath is a plug-in for real mathematical typesetting with InDesign and InCopy, whereas Readabilities can make an objective and reliable measure for the readability of text. This can be important if one needs to judge whether an intended reader group will understand the text."

Readabilities (K4) Approved For Use With K4

We are happy to announce that the new version of our cutting-edge plug-in “Readabilities” has been tested and approved for use within the K4 editorial system, developed by vjoon GmbH, Hamburg, Germany.

Schoolbook publishers, magazine and newspaper publishers – everyone who publishes text for a specific reader group, need to ensure that their text, precisely the readability level of their text, matches this intended reader group. This means especially not too difficult, but not too easy as well.

In order to analyze and categorize text, acknowledged scientists have developed a variety of methods and algorithms, each based on measurable text properties: the used vocabulary, sentence length and complexity, average number of syllables, just to mention a few. Therefore, applying these methods is a time-consuming and partly cumbersome task, if you need to do it with external software or maybe even by hand.

And so here are the key benefits using the “Readabilities”:

You analyze any kind and portion of English or Spanish text with just one click with up to 10 different methods.

The results are automatically saved and stored with the document, and, if you work within a K4 environment, in the K4 database as well.

For your quality assurance, you can routinely and automatically analyze your text in order to ensure that you publish the right text for the right reader group.

You save an enormous amount of time, because authors and editors can monitor the text’s readability level at any time from the very first word on.

You use only acknowledged scientific methods being available to the public in order to determine the readability level. Hence, you know exactly what the software does.

You just work within your familiar software, InCopy or InDesign.

„Readabilities“ is available, at the moment, for InCopyCS3/CS4 and InDesignCS3/CS4 on both platforms MAC and Windows. For all additional information and sources of supply, please visit our website http://www.itip-gmbh.eu.

Simultaneous Workflows with vjoon K4

vjoon K4 is a database publishing platform connected to Adobe Creative Suite that allows everyone involved in the production of a newspaper, magazine, or Web portal to work on text and layout simultaneously. While editors are still writing articles, graphic designers can already start the layout without having to wait for the finalized text, resulting in enormous time savings for publishers and media houses, and corporate publishers! Designers see that text or an illustration has changed in their layout and can simply reload the corresponding article or image with a mouse click. vjoon K4 even allows for updating Excel tables.

vjoon (formerly SoftCare) has been in the publishing business for almost 20 years. Today we are a leading developer of visionary publishing solutions based on the Adobe Creative Suite. Our database-driven K4 Publishing System offers media companies and corporate publishers the ideal solution for managing content of any kind and for preparing and distributing it through a variety of media channels. Our customers use K4 on a daily basis to produce newspapers, magazines, corporate reports, image brochures, packaging design, books, and much more. Additional solutions from vjoon include K2, a system for smaller workgroups, as well as the Notes Manager and Overset Manager plug-ins. All additional information can be found on the company’s website http://www.vjoon.com.

InMath 1.8 (CS4) - All New Features

From Monday, May 11th, InMath 1.8 (CS4) will come to market. InMath 1.8 will be available for InDesign (CS4) and InCopy (CS4) on both platforms MAC and WIN.

The following new features are incorporated:

1) IDML support.
2) INX support, in order to ensure compatibility to earlier InDesign versions.
3) InMath styles and InMath commands can be part of "Quick Apply".
4) Improved recognition and correction of inconsistent InMath data in documents.
5) Documents containing InMath data need to be opened either with a licensed copy of InMath or with the free InMath-Reader in order to ensure the document's consistency.
6) InMath templates are now saved language-independent.

to 1): IDML Support
InMath styles and InMath expressions are exported and imported within the new IDML format. Hence, if a document with InMath data is exported into IDML or imported from IDML, InMath (or the InMath-Reader) will convert all necessary InMath-related information.

When a document is exported into or imported from the IDML format without InMath (or the InMath-Reader) being loaded, all InMath data will – according to the InDesign conventions – be stripped out, meaning that they will be irreversibly lost. This is exactly like the INX export/import in CS3 and CS4, and is no error and no bug.

For your daily work: InMath (or the InMath-Reader) needs to be installed on each machine where you work on documents with InMath data. This will ensure the integrity and consistency of your documents.

to 2): INX Support

In order to ensure the compatibility to earlier versions of InDesign/InCopy, we made sure that the exported INX data (at least the InMath part of it) is compatible to CS3 and CS2. However, the names of the InMath templates will be translated in respect to the current InDesign/InCopy language during the INX export.

to 3): Quick Apply Support

InMath 1.8 provides an additional plug-in which incorporates InMath styles and InMath commands into the Quick Apply panel.

InMath styles are listed within the Quick Apply panel as soon as a portion of text is selected. Moreover, you can apply a (language-dependent) keyboard shortcut in order to filter the Quick Apply list.

to 4): Recognition And Correction of Inconsistencies

InMath now recognizes some kinds of problems with InMath data in InDesign/InCopy documents and repairs them during the document opening process.

Some problemes led, sometimes, even to InDesign/InCopy crashes. Now, InMath can repair critical inconsistencies, so that you can further work with the documents. However, inconsistent InMath styles may be deleted, and inconsistent InMath expressions may be converted to plain text (without InMath information). Very important to know: No text will be deleted! If necessary, only invalid InMath data will be removed.

to 5): InMath Is Now "Required".

As we have been encountering problems with inconsistent documents, and as we have to calculate with CS4 conversion-related problems as well, we decided to set InMath, according to the InDesign conventions, as "required". Until CS3, InMath was defined as "optional".

This is acceptable, because everyone can install the free InMath-Reader version.

zu 6): InMath Templates Are Saved Language-Independent

Since CS4, the InMath templates' names are stored independent from the actual language. This is the case in both INDD and IDML-based formats.

InMath templates in INX documents will be converted during the import accordingly. Also, with the conversion of older InDesign documents, InMath templates' names will be converted as well.

InMath Reader
The InMath Reader module is available from i.t.i.p. GmbH at no cost. Please just write us an e-mail to inmath@itip-gmbh.eu.
